How to Descale an Espresso Machine (General Steps)
While exact steps vary by model, most home espresso machines follow a similar descaling process. Always consult your owner's manual first.
- Empty and rinse the water tank. Remove any water filter if present.
- Mix the descaling solution. Use the concentration recommended on the product label — typically one packet or a measured dose per liter of water. Citric acid (15–20 g per liter) is a common alternative.
- Fill the tank with the solution and place a large container under the group head and steam wand.
- Run the solution through the machine. Dispense about half through the group head, then half through the steam wand. On some machines, you activate a dedicated descale cycle.
